They are very reluctant to bite larger animals, instead headbutting if they have no choice but to fight back against a threat!
The Western Hognosed Snake Heterodon platirhinos is named for its upturned snout, which is mainly used as a tool for digging in sandy soil. Its main prey is toads, which is why they have fangs in the rear of their mouth as opposed to at the front like most snakes- the rear fangs help them puncture inflated toads so they can eat them!
They are also known as the Spreading Adder due to their defence mechanism of spreading their neck skin like a cobra to ward off predators. If this does not work, they will roll on their back and play dead. They even stick their tongue out and give off a horrible stench to make sure they aren't attacked!
