Fun Facts!

There are more than 500 breeds of domesticated pig (Sus scrofa domesticus) in the world. Domestic pigs are descendants of the Wild Boar and the Sulawesi Warty Pig.

The UK has 11 native pig breeds and all 11 are considered rare and at risk of extinction.

Pigs are very clean animals. Everyone must have been told at some point "your room is a pigsty" - this is a very misleading phrase as pigs are some of the cleanest animals around. They refuse to poo and wee where they eat.

"Sweating like a pig" is another misleading, commonly used phrase, since pigs can't actually sweat! Pigs don't have any sweat glands so instead they roll around in mud to keep cool. This also protects their skin from getting sunburnt.

Pigs are really smart! Their intelligence is higher than a dogs and some primates and is equivalent to a human toddler.

They have excellent memories, remembering things for years.

A pig's sense of smell is about 2,000 times better than a human's.
