Facts

Shetland ponies Equus caballus are Britain’s smallest native breed of pony. Due to their short stature they were used to work underground in coal mines. The Shetland pony can pull twice its own weight, stronger than most horses. They have lived on the Shetland Isles for at least 2000 years. They have since been exported worldwide. In winter, the Shetland pony  will grow a double coat for protection. The coat has “guard hairs” which shed rain and make for an extremely waterproof winter coat
